Sydlynn Hayle goes to high school, doesn't fit in, gets picked on and leads a fairly normal life. Except that her Mother is a powerful leader of a coven, her Dad is a demon, her Sister needs magic to hide her true identity and her Grams is crazy. All she wants is to be free of her magic and the coven. To lead a normal life... if only it were that easy.
Right off the bat one of the main things that I liked about this book was how relateable Sydlynn (cool name right?) was. She was written as the typical selfish, woe is me teenage girl who doesn't get along with her parents. I know that most teenagers feel like their parents "just don't understand". Or at least I did. But what I particularly liked was her growth in the book. it was believable unlike a lot of other books I have read. I also enjoyed the fact that this book made fun of itself a lot. Whether intentional or not it added a lot of humor to the book that I wasn't expecting. The way Sydlynn described her family as the stereotypical witch family (being exactly like you think it is), it kind of made you feel like it could be real. Most of the characters were memorable and the story line (teenage angst aside) was mostly original.
One thing that bugged me about the book as the abrupt ending. It left way to many things wide open. I know there's going to be another one but it just felt so incomplete. Aside from that it was a fast read that would easily appeal to young girls and I would love to read more of the series. 4 Ravens.
