Sun Mage is book 2 in the Blacklight Chronicles written by John Forrester and it was AWESOME! I had the pleasure of reading both books in the series pretty much back to back and everything that I was disappointed with (which wasnt much), in the first one was forgotten. The fast pace for this book, like the first one, makes it a great read for pre-teens, teens and adults. A classic high fantasy novel with gods, magic, friendship and deception. We start the novel with Talis, Mara, Nikulo and Rikar aboard a slave ship uncertain of their futures and it just roller coasters from there. I literally could not put Sun Mage down and I read it in about 2 hours! The message of the book is clear. In light there is darkness and in darkness light and one can't survive without the other. It surprised me to find this kind of depth in the book. I wasn't expecting it and it was a very good surprise!
As for the characters, it was quite interesting to see them grow and change. Talis and Mara growing closer and then ever their bond almost unbreakable now. While Nikulo and Rikar fall apart. I felt sorry for Rikar in his descent, you know he's an idiot and there's nothing you can do about it. As for Nikulo I really enjoyed him in this book. In the first one I was indifferent he didn't seem special but it was cool to see what different powers he had and to watch him struggle to choose between a friend an whats right.
A lot of the questions that I had in the first book were answered (thank you), and of course it leaves the reader with more questions. Which I love. The cliffhanger ending was amazing and I found myself yelling at the book "You can't end it that way!" I love it when an author offers you closure and then throws a curve ball on the last page!
I give this book 5 Ravens and now I am DYING to read the next one. I anxiously await its arrival.
