Title: Kingdom of Lost Children: The Book of Ren Author: L.J. Carter Recommended Age: 16+ Reviewed By: Maegan Morin Blog Reviewed For: Great Minds Think Aloud Rating: 4 Ravens
On her 6th birthday Leyla's mother mysteriously disappears and she is forced to go live with the evil Lord Faolan. After 10 years of cruelty Leyla returns to her old home and discovers an ancient script that may just lead her to her destiny.
First off I want to say that this was a really good read. It was an easy read and though I didn't get completely immersed in it I did find it to be quite enjoyable. The main character Leyla was easy to relate too. Though we may not have gone through the same things as her we have all had the same feelings. The message of the book is what you do with those feelings. The book had a really great message: Never give up hope! L.J. Carter has a great talent for description, be them character or scenery. The world came alive while I was reading, Also there are several brilliant illustrations that help carry your imagination along. The author creatively used elements from other stories as well as adding creations of her own. It was brilliant to see the way Carter made it all come together. However as much as I admired her talent for incorporating those elements into her book I also felt it was the books only downfall. I felt like I had read it all before. Aside from that though the book still held a lot of surprises that I really didn't see coming and an ending that leans itself to future books which I eagerly anticipate.
