It takes you on a wonderful trip through time and Talent, revenge and deceit. 17 year old Tamsin Greene descends from a long line of witches and is prophesized to be the most powerful of them all. Unfortunately, Tamsin disappoints her family by being nothing more than ordinary. A situation Tamsin tries to pretend doesn’t bother her, but deep inside she longs to be different like the rest of her family. Her opportunity comes when a stranger mistakes Tamsin for her ‘super perfect and talented’ sister Rowena. Instead of correcting the stranger, Tamsin finds a way to prove to her family and to herself that she is special. Carolyn MacCullough has written a refreshing tale about a girl who feels she doesn’t belong – not in her own family nor the ordinary world. Tamsin has a strong voice and a good head on her shoulders making her a believable and very likable heroine. Even the secondary characters, Tamsin’s family, Gabriel, Agatha, they are all likable and believable. While there were a few plot elements that seemed expendable, overall Once A Witch was a great weekend read which left me wanting to jump into book two. Thankfully, I had it ready and waiting.
