Nevermore by William HJortsberg is a novel that mixes Harry Houdini and Sir Conan Doyle with the literary works and spirit of Edgar Poe. The book takes some patience as the backgrounds of the characters are established, seemingly unrelated. However, the story comes together and a solid murder mystery is the reward. The story includes many factual aspects, including Doyle’s interest in spiritualism as well as Houdini’s attempt to debunk the same spiritualists. While the story was a bit more sexually graphic than I expected, the author does a good job of intertwining fact and fiction for a good period mystery with a touch of the paranormal.
